When John was twelve, his father moved the family to Paris, to work on translating ancient Ugaritic tablets, dating back to 1300 B.C. In Paris, John began studying with a wonderful teacher, Lillian Sargent, whom John says really started his evolution as an artist. Once a week, the two would go to different parts of Paris, and start sketching.

John Fisher started drawing when he was eight years old. He was living in Enid, Oklahoma, where his father was a professor at a university there. He was the second of four children, with one older brother. There weren't any artists in the family. One day, John picked up a pencil and started drawing.

In 1972, John traveled to Eugene, Here John met Tom Blodgett who would really expand his artist forms of expression. "He completely threw out the window everything I had done until this point. Instead, he showed me the process of pulling the image out of the abstract. His concept was that ideas that come from our conscious brain are superficial and stereotypical. The idea that came from the process, that was born from the process, sprung from our inner core."
